Sarah Abbott (32) finishes editing her latest project, already having a number of laurels to its credit. Her tireless dedication to the craft has seen her win numerous screenplay competitions and short film festivals, generating a ton of platitudes from those who've seen her work, and others simply making polite conversation. While nothing concrete has actually come of these efforts, its certainly provided a boost in confidence. "Agents have gone from not even responding to my emails, to brief, polite acknowledgement that they want nothing to do with me. That has to count for something!"

This is quite common as most agents and producers don't accept unsolicited material for fear of litigation should it be too similar to future projects, as well the realisation they'd have to judge a script by its quality and not the name on the cover.

In order to better understand this most competitive of industries we reached out to executive Howard Manning to ask how he's able to make such a determination without actually having read the work. “I gloss over the excerpts of my assistant's summary of the outline.” He continued, "You gotta remember we're in business of making movies, not films." It's this kind of foresight that has lead to such a boom in original, though provoking content, lingering in executives junk mail.

The representatives she's reached out to have also provided great help in trying to find an agent as, in a most pragmatic of systems, they require one to have a significant project produced to take on a client despite producers requiring an agent to get such a project developed. Financial concerns are also taken into account, as for they system to function properly their bonuses must originate from somewhere.

Despite these, many, many, set backs, does Sarah ultimately believe the day will come when they'll actually read her work before fabricating such excuses? “That’s the dream!”
