West Edmonton Mall

In solidarity with their beloved franchise, the West Edmonton Mall is renaming their iconic roller coaster The Mindbender after Oilers netminder Stuart Skinner during their Stanley Cup run. While Mindbender is nothing if not an apt comparison to Oilers hockey, they felt this gesture more directly reflected their support.

“We think they have the team to get it done this year and wanted to throw our support behind them.” said mall representative Christine Chalmers. “And what better way than to replicate that feeling! I mean when are you gonna get closer to the visceral thrill of roaring back from two goals down late, or the nauseating sensation of coming face to face with Corey Perry?”

The enigmatic Skinner has continued his sporadic play this post season either shutting out his opponents or offering more holes than the average horror movie plot. While this is both confusing and frustrating for fans, the entertainment factor offers something truly unique.

Oft scratched teammate Jeff Skinner was touched that several people mistook this gesture as a symbol of his tempestuous season/relationship with head coach Chris Knoblach. Appearing in just a single post season game in his first trip to the playoffs, he was taking it in stride. “I’m sure it’s a blast. Hope I get at least one ride.”

Fans have come to embrace the love/hate nature of their relationship with the experience, and while Skinner has become the poster child for this chaotic style, he is far from alone in this spirit. Whether it’s the sublime, superlative defying, skill of stars Conor McDavid & Leon Draisaitl, or river boat gambler Evan Bouchard the team is (endearingly) referred to as a ‘cocaine circus’ by the guys at the What Chaos pod. ..At this juncture the mall has no intention of incorporating this aspect into the experience.
