As if the Everest of breaking into the industry wasn’t challenge enough for creatives, the continued development of AI has caused even more consternation and bewilderment than the mass appeal of its art.

After a decade struggling to gain any traction, reaching out to any and all who’d listen, greeted with one soulless reply after another, Sarah Blake (32) found herself at a crossroads. While her talent wasn’t in question, how was she ever going to catch someone’s attention? Then, an idea struck and she was hired by a firm to develop a generic dismissal response to all those, who like her dared to reach out in the, albeit ornamental, Contact Us section of production companies websites.

“Turns out the greatest need for people like me is to let us know we’re not needed.” It was this epiphany that lead to her devising a catch all rejection letter, that was in and of itself a work of art. It was dismissive without being cruel, considerate without actually caring and condescending though never outright so.

As companies and agencies across the industry learned of this, she helped developed an AI which they dubbed AdIos…though she’s sure to point out the name was not her suggestion. “I mean it’s a bit on the nose, but suitably clever for an AI.” This technology automatically responds to any inquiry, effectively letting would be clients know that they both appreciate their interest but can’t be bothered. As framed by one such Producer “It’d be easier to consider these nobodies if every film produced wasn’t such a smash hit.”

So what’s the secret to an effective dismisssl? “If you can mask the indifference as genuine. You can only crush their spirit so much, not enough that they might snap but you also don’t want to give them any realistic hope. That’s the sweet spot.”

Despite all this, Sarah remains optimistic as her meds permit. “The reality is there’s thousands of people like me, and it’s tough but you’ve gotta understand if the powers that be actually bothered to sort through their inbox to find those diamonds in the rough they’d risk possible lawsuits should they develop something similar, not to mention having to trim lunch to two hours.”
